Managing yourself and managing teams through difficult times (3 x 3 Hours)

Part 1 – Understanding self, navigating change and strengthening resilience

According to a Chinese proverb, if you can command yourself, you can command the world. Before managing people, projects and processes, it’s important to manage ourselves. Now that most of us are working from home, we’ve a great opportunity to self reflect. It’s a chance to understand our strengths, what causes us stress and coach yourself increase and maintain your performance, your motivation and job satisfaction.

After participating in this highly interactive, fun and challenging virtual session, you will:

  • Complete the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator profiling tool to identify your behavioural preferences on how you are energised, how you process information, how you make decisions and how you approach deadlines
  • Receive, interpret and discuss your results to:
    • Understand and celebrate what makes you unique and your contribution to your team
    • Understand potential hindrances and how others might see you, and identify things to start and stop doing
  • Help you understand the stages in change (confusion, denial, anger, negotiating, depression, testing and acceptance) and how to deal and progress through this change
  • Develop some practical approaches to being more motivated and energised (including removing negative thought, changing your state, when to seek help, handling criticism, motivational anchors, variety and taking breaks).

Part 2 – Leading and motivating others remotely

It is not always easy to manage people, particularly in this current “lockdown” period, as you get use to managing remotely and your team adapts to working from home, new ways of working and managing workload. It is crucial as a manager to actively engage staff, increase motivation and morale and keep them focused. After participating in this highly interactive, fun and challenging virtual session, you will:

  • Identify your preferred leadership style and when and how to adopt a range of leaderships styles
  • Assessing and managing different people (Skill-Will matrix)
  • Managing people through periods of change and how to implement change effectively
  • Managing people at different team stages
  • Use the ‘GROW’ Coaching Model to maximise the impact of virtual coaching sessions, one-to-one reviews and ad hoc check-ins
  • Provide tips to share with team on how to effectively work at home
  • What motivates employees, and how to create opportunities linking in to what makes them tick

 

Part 3 – How to create high performing virtual teams

It’s important to learn how to work effectively with others. It’s commonly recognised that people like working with people they like, and with ‘people that are most like them’. In this session we’ll also focus on how to work effectively as part of a team when working from home. After participating in this highly interactive, fun and challenging virtual session, you will:

  • Identify what makes a high performing team and team player
  • Explore Tuckman’s Forming-Storming-Norming-Performing-Mourning model and discuss what stage the teams you belong to are at. Identify what you can do to help the team move successfully to the next stage.
  • Complete an audit of the team to identify team strengths and where you can improve
  • Effective virtual team working (communication and over-communication, choosing the right communication method, meeting rhythms and virtual reviews, opportunities to socialise virtually)
  • Develop and practice some key interpersonal skills like communication, rapport building, questioning, active listening, body language, feedback and difficult conversations
  • Virtual team building exercise to practice new team working and interpersonal skills learned
