In the current Covid-19 pandemic many leaders and managers find themselves having to provide leadership to individuals and teams who are working remotely.  In many cases this can be the very first time they have had to do this.

The challenge today is to balance empathy and accountability in equal measure. Some people are working at home in very challenging situations with family all around them and they need empathetic support. At the same time things still to get done to keep the business moving and this is where accountability comes in.

Overall, leading remote teams are very similar to traditional teams. However, communication and team building occur more naturally in face-to-face teams. Because of this, leaders of virtual teams should take deliberate actions to build in activities and practices that are vital to team success.
